The History of BAO

BAO PAU is a unique dining & gourmet delivery experience that has been delighting diners in Nicosia for several years. The restaurant’s opened Its doors late 2019 just before the pandemic begun.

The story of BAO PAU begins with its founder’s travels to Asia, where he became enamored with the region’s street food culture. He spent months exploring the bustling street markets of Tokyo, Seoul, and Taipei, sampling the local cuisine and observing the techniques used by street vendors to create their dishes.

Inspired by what he had seen, the Chef Marios Malekkos returned to Cyprus and set about creating a unique dining concept that would bring the flavors of Asia to the streets of Nicosia. He spent months experimenting with different recipes, combining traditional Asian ingredients with locally sourced produce to create a fusion of flavors that would appeal to local tastes.

After several months of planning and preparation, BAO PAU opened its doors in the heart of Nicosia at Agapnoros in Lykavitos area. The restaurant is focused on delivery & takeaway, but as people loved the food so much, they would tun up to the store to have a quick lunch & dinner. With a dining space for small groups of four to six, it clearly needed to expand. Now days if you pass by you’ll see a large outside seating area that can accommodate around approximately 60 people.

From the outset, BAO PAU was a hit with locals and tourists alike. Diners were impressed by the restaurant’s innovative menu, which featured a range of Asian-inspired dishes, including bao buns, rice bowls, and their signature Sushi rolls

The restaurant’s signature dish, bao buns, quickly became a favorite among diners, with its soft, pillowy texture and delicious fillings proving to be a winning combination.

As word of mouth spread, BAO PAU’s reputation grew, and the restaurant soon became one of Nicosia’s most popular dining choices. The restaurant’s success was due in no small part to its founder’s commitment to quality, with all dishes made from scratch using only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients.

Bao Pau has become a favourite amongst the food blogger community of Cyprus and you’ll find various posts, reels and testaments of their excellence on social media.

Over the years, BAO PAU has expanded its menu to include a wider range of dishes, incorporating flavors and techniques from across Asia.
